Punu Ceremonial Mask from West Africa

This is a 20th century adaptation of ceremonial Punu masks, traditionally used in funerals and other ceremonies. These wooden masks, finished in white kaolin, have been used to symbolize peace, deities, the spirit of the dead, and the afterlife by the Punu.

The Punu people are one of the 4 major ethnic groups of the Gabon and the Republic of the Congo region of West Africa. They speak Yipunu, a Bantu language, also known as Yisira.

This hand-carved mask measures approximately 20 inches high x 13 inches wide, including the heart-shaped base. There is a long crack running down the left side of both the face and the base, as shown in the photos. These masks represented ushers of the underworld.
